Earliest Memory

wonder toddling across

a crewcut green lawn

chasing a butterfly

that alights, wings pulsing

on a trellis hung rose

an enchantment

sheer wings throbbing

amid leaves and thorns

in midday summer sun

that startles something awake

and  then a call

I look back

to mother standing

beckoning in our

kitchen doorway
