Incontinent Nature

Having imbibed too much 

  waiting impatiently offstage 

  all the long daylight hours,

  night fell tipsily,

  like a staggering drunk,

  taking one step at a time

  for as long as he is able,

  but gradually losing altitude

  and tumbling to the sidewalk

  as the hours now ratchet

  toward another dawn.
